SCOUTING.

Experience adventures - strengthen personalities - build friendships

A large part of the YMCA Switzerland's activities involves scouting. As the YMCA/YWCA Zurich, we are the city association for five YMCA scouting groups within the city of Zurich. The Glockenhof Guides and Scouts Association ("Gloggi-Pfadi") is also one of our members.

Scouting aims to give children and young adults a place to develop their personality, have adventures and explore new worlds with body, mind & spirit.

YMCA Scouting groups and Guides & Scouts troops offer children and youth a meaningful, fun way to spend their free time. Children age 7 and up can take part in the activities with many oppportunities to learn new skills, grow personally and learn to take responsibility. Some groups offer activities for children as young as 4 years.

As the first association to introduce scouting activities to the canton of Zurich, we're proud to also be the only YMCA association in Switzerland to be working so closely with the Guides & Scouts Association (Pfadibewegung Schweiz) and having a Guides & Scouts troop as one of our members. This may come as a surprise to many, as the YMCA and Guides & Scouts are known to have some rivalry between their respective scouting groups. However, we have believed for a long time that what connects us - our shared commitment to meaningful youth work - is greater than what divides us. For this reason, we also offer equipment for both YMCA and Guides & Scouts groups in our store, and our concept space has been a valued meeting place for both organisations.

The Glockenhof Guides & Scouts (Gloggi-Pfadi) are a self-contained association and organise their own activities. The same is true for the YMCA/YWCA scouting groups we have as members. More information (in German) is available on their websites (see below).

YMCA / YWCA Scouting

The YMCA/YWCA Zurich is a working partnership for all the YMCA/YWCA groups within the city of Zurich. These are five groups comprising a total of around 700 members. The YMCA/YWCA Zurich aims to support these groups and complement their offers, and to strengthen the good reputation of the YMCA/YWCA in the city of Zurich.

YMCA/YWCA scouting groups offer children a useful leisure activity where the can experience nature, play games, sing songs, listent to Biblial and other stories, and have fun with other chidren. They are also taught useful skills like First Aid and how to build tents and cook over a campfire. In all of this, we believe that mutual appreciation, helpfulness and empathy are key.

Usually, scouting meetups take place between 2 and 5 PM on Saturdays. Camps take place during the spring, summer or fall school holidays and often over Pentecost, and can take place in group houses or tents.

Scouting group participants are pre-school or school-aged girls and boys. Activities are divided by gender and age group. Each group is supervised by educated adolescents and adults who are prepared for their job in function-based leadership courses.
